Chapter Two: Nijikai

The nijikai or “second gathering” is simple, fun, and full of laughs. To me theres no better way to have a nijikai than to go to an izakaya, a traditional Japanese bar. In an izakaya the rules of social engagement are relaxed and personal space ceases to exist. Izakayas are fun and exciting, each one stained with the owners personality in their own unique ways but generally theres a few things you can expect. The number one thing to expect is a small intimate size. There is no privacy in an izikaya, and everyone is part of the nights narrative, you’ll inevitable be

shoulder to shoulder with others so be open to making new friends. Expect that everyone is part of the party, buy the bar a round of shots, a full izakaya can only hold about 5 people anyways. Buy the bartender a drink, they’re part of the fun too. Expect delicious food. Chicken skewers, fried octopus, or grilled strips of meat are all common in izakayas, you’ll find them served in small portions and fittingly small plates. Enjoy and share this food. Finally, expect the rules of social engagement to change. To many, the izakaya is the only place they feel they can be honest, open, and expressive. Enjoy an intimate conversation, get to know someone's culture, in exchange they’ll ask about yours. There's a million ways to have a nijikai, but rarely does anything compare to the well rounded beauty of an izikaya.
